Working as a locum gives you flexibility. Working as a locum with Northern Health gives you the opportunity to combine that flexibility with something more: the support of a real team, high-performing services and the chance to make a meaningful difference to patients.
At Northern Health, we exist to help urgent and emergency care services keep running smoothly, providing the GPs and clinicians they need on-demand, day or night. And our mission is simple but demanding: 100% coverage, every day, for every patient.
We are built around four central values:
Putting patients first
Empowering each other
Delivering better every single day
Embracing innovation.
They shape how we work with NHS partners, how we support our clinicians and how we deliver care and cover you can count on.
And those aren’t just words. The performance of the services we support gives them real meaning.
Join a team with a track record to be proud of
At the time of writing, we have cared for almost half a million patients through the UTC. In 2025/26 alone, we cared for a record 77,358 patients – more than 6,400 every month. And we saw 96.5% within four hours. That was the strongest year on record and it’s all thanks to great teamwork and values.
For our locum GPs and clinicians, those numbers matter. The numbers show what can happen when experienced clinicians, reliable cover and effective systems come together.
Start with the support you need
Great coverage and performance means supporting clinicians properly.
We know that joining a new clinical environment means quickly understanding different systems, colleagues, expectations and shift patterns. That’s why we put real emphasis on induction and making sure our locums arrive feeling informed and prepared.
As Dr Chukwujama explains:
“My induction was incredibly informative and well-structured, providing clarity on shift patterns, workplace expectations and the overall environment. The tour made me feel welcome and ready to start.”
It reflects something fundamental about Northern Health. We understand the pressures of healthcare because we live them too. We focus on practical support, kindness, reliability and getting the job done properly: real people who really care.
Flexibility without feeling on your own
Flexibility is one of the great advantages of locum work. But working flexibly doesn’t have to mean working in isolation.
Northern Health brings together a community of NHS GPs and healthcare clinicians who share our values and commitment to high-quality patient care.
Dr Tasaduq Khajwal has seen that community develop:
“Over the last few years, Northern Health has established a great team, managing both patients and colleagues safely and efficiently.”
Be part of a team that values your contribution
Empowering each other is one of our core values. Every voice matters. We respect new ideas, encourage people to speak up and build relationships that create open channels of communication.
For Dr Aleem Ladak, that has resulted in a relationship with Northern Health stretching back to 2017:
“I have worked with Northern Health since 2017 and have recommended them to many of my colleagues. The staff and Directors are extremely helpful and approachable.”
That sense of belonging matters. You might be working as a locum, but we want you to feel like a member of the team.
Make a measurable difference to patient care
Ultimately, the numbers that matter most are about our patients.
In 2025/26, 97% of patients at the UTC were resolved without emergency admission, with only 2.6% requiring admission. The UTC also added approximately 9.5 percentage points to the Trust’s overall four-hour performance – moving the blended figure from 62.9% to 72.4%.
It demonstrates the difference that experienced, GP-led care can make. Far more than simply filling shifts, we’re helping patients receive appropriate care efficiently and supporting the wider urgent and emergency care system.
That is what care you can count on looks like in practice.
Keep delivering better
We’re proud of strong performance, but our value of delivering better every single day means continually looking for ways to improve.
The UTC has grown from 42,387 patients in its launch year to 77,358 in 2025/26 – an 82% increase. Despite those growing volumes, 2025/26 delivered 96.5% four-hour performance, while the number of breaches fell by 46% compared with the previous year.
It’s an environment where experienced clinicians can make a genuine contribution – through their clinical judgement, their ideas and the care they provide every shift.
